Top 10 Female SNL Writers

In a 2011 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Jane Curtin discussed how misogynistic SNL was when she was there.

(this video isn't the best quality, but it has the clip that I wanted to share)

Still, there have been many wonderfully talented women on their writing staff, and I'd like to dedicate this week's top 10 list to them. Many of the women on this list went on to create sitcoms after leaving SNL.
Here are the Top 10 Female SNL Writers:

10) J.J. Philbin

9) Laura Kightlinger

8) Carol Leifer

7) Patricia Marx

6) Jean Doumanian

5) Bonnie Turner

4) Pamela Norris

3) Marilyn Suzanne Miller

2) Anne Beatts

1) Tina Fey (the first female head writer!)

What other female SNL writers do you think should be added to the list? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Rosie Shuster!!! She only created characters such as Uncle Roy (Buck Henry), Roseanne Roseannadanna (Gilda Radner), and, with Anne Beatts, the nerds Todd LaBounta and Lisa Loopner (Bill Murray and Gilda Radner, respectively). She also was responsible for the majority of the “Baba Wawa” sketches and introduced the Bees as the show’s first recurring characters.
Shuster went on to write for a handful of other inspired series, including Square Pegs, Carol & Company, and Bob and Margaret. After working with Carol Burnett, she wrote on The Larry Sanders Show.

  2. Kightlinger doesn't speak very highly of her experience at SNL and Lorne Michaels. Maybe Fey changed things, but it used to be a very sexist environment. I love Kightlinger. I wish her show on IFC had lasted longer.
