is pretty sloppy to post the list before it's complete. Tons of other lady directors have been nominated!" Oh, you dreamers, you...
Actually, these aren't just the top four, they are the only four female Oscar nominees for Best Director. Ever.
In the 85 year history of the Academy Awards, approximately 425 films have been nominated for Best Director, and only four were directed by women. That's not even a full one percent! Meanwhile, over 90 male directors have received multiple nominations in this category.
Check back next Monday for another, less depressing, Top 10 list.
So sad...but on the brighter side, female foreign directors have done better with the Academy.
ReplyDeleteThe Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film has gone to two women: Marleen Gorris for Antonia's Line (The Netherlands, 1995) and Caroline Link for Nowhere in Africa (Germany, 2002). AND a total of 17 women have been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
