Top 10 Sitcoms Starring Female Stand Ups

As often is the case, this week's top 10 list is inspired by what is going on in my life. I recently began doing stand up comedy at open mic nights (it's super fun, you should try it). Stand up comedy and acting are two different talents, so I want to celebrate the women who have successfully done both. The shows on this list don't all have the comedienne as the "star" of the show, but the parts are good and the ladies are great. Here's my list of the Top 10 Sitcoms Starring Female Stand Ups:

10) Suddenly Susan (Kathy Griffin) Brooke who? Kathy Griffin is fantastic and I love her.

9) The Larry Sanders Show/The Ben Stiller Show (Janeane Garofalo) She wasn't in every episode of the former, and the latter didn't last long, but she's an incredibly funny lady.

8) Drop Dead Diva (Margaret Cho) I'm playing a little fast and loose with the word sitcom here, because DDD is not... but it is funny and Margaret Cho is fabulous in it.

7) Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Caroline Rhea) She was the funniest part of the show. (Sorry, Melissa Joan Hart.)

6) The New Adventures of Old Christine (Wanda Sykes) She didn't play Old Christine (or new Christine), but Wanda Sykes played the hilarious Barb, who complemented Old Christine quite well. (*This show was also created by a woman, Kari Lizer, so double points.)

5) The Sarah Silverman Program (Sarah Silverman) She's hilarious.

4) The Parkers (Mo'Nique) This Moesha spin-off saw Mo'Nique playing a mother going to college with her daughter.

3) Grace Under Fire (Brett Butler) Good stuff. Well done.

2) Ellen (Ellen DeGeneres) The way this show ended was heartbreaking (canceled after Ellen came out... the show was still funny, but people stopped watching), but she's back with her crazy-successful talk show, so all's well that ends with Portia de Rossi (that's how that saying goes, right?).

1) Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) Duh. Sandra Bernhard also appeared on this show many, many times, so this one's a twofer.
