I don't think the lack of
women in film is necessarily a bad thing. (Oooh! Them's fightin' words!) Just
hear... er, read...me out. Here are the Top 10 Reasons the Lack of Women in
Film isn't All Bad:
10) Being a minority allows
us to have fun "just for us" things like the Broad Humor Film
Festival!
9) This blog exists. That
gives me something to do every Monday.
8) If there were tons of
women in the industry, there would be no reason for diversity programs to help
women break in.
7) Women are fantastic at
affecting change. The right to vote, the right to work in "manly
jobs," the right to buy birth control pills without the pharmacist
lecturing you on why being a slut is un-Christian (or something, I don't know).
Someday, people will look back at us and praise this generation of women
filmmakers for increasing the presence of women in the film industry. It's
happening right now! You're part of it!
6) Low expectations can be a
wonderful gift. If people expect you to be incompetent, you really only have to
be mediocre to seem like a freaking genius.
5) So, men direct more
studio pictures than women. That means they direct more bad studio pictures
than women. Keep cranking out those stinkers, fellas. We'll keep making awesome
ones. (The logic might not work there... whatever. I know what I mean.)
4) It's all about the
journey. Standing at the top of a mountain must be incredibly satisfying, but
it doesn't mean as much if you get there in a helicopter.
3) There are so many
milestones left! The honor of "first female director to win two Best
Director Oscars" is still up for grabs. It could be you! Or me! Well, not
me. I'm a writer. But, it could be you!
2) Okay, it sucks. But...
1) There's nowhere to go but
up!
